El actor británico Pete Postlethwaite falleció el lunes 3 de Enero 2011 en un hospital de Shropshire a los 64 años, víctima de un cáncer contra el que estuvo luchando durante dos décadas.

Nacido en 1945 en Warrington, condado de Cheshire (noroeste inglaterra), empezó su carrera de actor en el Everyman Theatre de Liverpool. Sus trabajos más recientes son la película El Origen, de Christopher Nolan, Salomon Kane y Furia de Titanes, de Louis Leterrier.

Durante la década de los 90 participó en populares películas como Romeo y Julieta (1996), El último mohicano (1992), así como El mundo perdido: Parque Jurásico 2, del director Steven Spielberg, quien dijo que Postlethwaite era “el mejor actor del mundo”.

En su carrera cinematográfica destacó por su impecable y sutil interpretación de personajes corrientes, a los que dotaba de una gran humanidad.

El actor, quien sufría de cáncer, fue nominado al Óscar en 1993 en la categoría de Mejor Actor de Reparto por su actuación en la película En el Nombre del Padre del irlandés Jim Sheridan.

En Los Virtuosos (1997) del británico Mark Herman, dirigía con pasión una fanfarria local integrada por jóvenes decepcionados pero decididos a participar en un concurso nacional.

Postlethwaite, quien estaba casado y tenía dos hijos, fue además activista político. Se manifestó contra la guerra de Irak, apoyó la campaña británica Make Poverty History (Haz que la pobreza sea historia) y en 2009 participó en la cinta sobre el calentamiento global llamada The Age of Stupid.
